SR&ED Tax Credit

Unlock access to over $4.5 billion in Federal government incentives designed to help businesses like yours supercharge R&D and fast-track product innovation.

The Scientific Research & Experimental Development (SR&ED) program is Canada’s largest and most powerful incentive for innovation, supporting over 22,000 companies each year with more than $4.5 billion in funding. If your business is pushing scientific or technological boundaries, you could recover a substantial portion of your R&D spend through lucrative federal Investment Tax Credits (ITCs). In addition to federal incentives, provincial and territorial credits can boost your overall return even higher, sometimes reaching over 70% of eligible costs for Canadian-Controlled Private Corporations (CCPCs).

With Ayming as your partner, you’ll maximize your SR&ED potential. Through the SR&ED tax credit and other innovation funding programs, we help you unlock your claim potential, accelerate growth, and stay ahead of the competition.

Fueling Innovation Across Every Industry

A common misconception is that the SR&ED Tax Credit is only for high-tech companies, research institutions, or advanced laboratories. The reality is very different.

The SR&ED program is intentionally designed to be broad and inclusive, and is available to any business carrying out R&D in Canada. It supports businesses across several industries, including and not limited to, manufacturing, IT/Software, aerospace, agriculture, food & beverage, oil & gas, clean technology, and life sciences. If you’re working to overcome technological uncertainty or solve complex technical challenges, your projects may qualify.

Maximize Returns on Your SR&ED Projects

If your work involves any of the following, there’s a strong chance it qualifies for SR&ED funding:

  • Developing new processes or production methods
  • Experimenting with new materials, prototypes or pilot projects
  • Improving product performance, quality, or durability
  • Resolving technical bottlenecks or production limitations
  • Advancing automation or digital transformation in operations

Navigating the SR&ED program requires more than just technical knowledge, it demands the ability to translate innovation into the language of CRA. Our team works closely with your technical staff to identify and frame eligible projects using SR&ED’s three-part test; technological uncertainty, advancement, and systematic investigation. Through guided interviews and documentation, we uncover and articulate the full SR&ED value of your work. The results is a compelling technical narrative aligned with CRA compliance standards.

We help you claim all eligible SR&ED expenditures, from salaries and materials to subcontractors and overhead. Our strategic approach ensures you’re maximizing return without compromising compliance. We also train your internal teams to adopt an “SR&ED mindset,” strengthening future claims. Plus, we provide insights on CRA audit trends and policy updates, helping you stay ahead of the curve and minimize risk.

Many companies overlook eligible SR&ED activities simply because they don’t fit the traditional mold. We help uncover all qualifying work, including those in gray areas. Beyond SR&ED, we also advise on complementary government grants and funding programs, including sector-specific and provincial-specific incentives such as OMMITC, E-Business Tax Credit, Multimedia Tax Credits, the IP Box regime, and more. This ensures your innovation strategy taps into the full spectrum of available funding.

A strong claim isn’t just about value, it’s about defendability. We ensure your submission aligns with the latest CRA guidance and help you implement internal documentation practices such as time tracking, experiment logs, and prototype records. From best-practice templates to full audit support, we give you the tools and confidence you need for a smooth review process.

No two companies are alike, so why should our fees be? We offer flexible service models, including contingency-based success fees, fixed-fee engagements, or à la carte support for specific needs like technical write-ups, training, or audits. Whether you’re seeking end-to-end service or targeted support, we tailor our approach to fit your goals, timelines, and internal capacity.

Frequently asked questions

The SR&ED program helps businesses recover a portion of the costs they invest in research and development. If your company is tackling scientific or technological challenges, whether through prototypes, testing, software development, or process improvements, you may be eligible.

Your work must aim to resolve technological uncertainty through a systematic process of experimentation or analysis, and you need to maintain detailed documentation throughout the investigation. Ayming turns SR&ED into a powerful tool to fuel innovation while improving your bottom line.

Any business with a permanent establishment in Canada conducting eligible SR&ED activities within Canada may qualify for the SR&ED tax credit, regardless of size or industry. Whether you are a small startup or a large enterprise, if you are conducting eligible R&D activities, you may qualify.

Canadian-controlled private corporations (CCPCs) benefit the most, with access to enhanced refundable credits, but public companies, foreign-owned corporations, partnerships, sole proprietors, and even individuals can also claim SR&ED, provided the work is done in Canada and meets CRA’s eligibility criteria.

At Ayming, we help businesses of all sizes and sectors navigate these rules, ensuring that projects pushing technological boundaries or solving scientific uncertainties can take full advantage of SR&ED.

When it comes to SR&ED, a wide range of expenses can translate into valuable tax credits for your business. Eligible costs include salaries and wages for employees directly involved in R&D, overhead tied to qualified work, and payments to Canadian companies performing SR&ED on your behalf. You can also claim materials consumed or transformed during the process, as well as contributions to universities, colleges, or research labs carrying out research for you. While most SR&ED activities must be conducted in Canada, certain expenditures abroad may qualify under strict conditions. With Ayming’s guidance, you can be confident you’re capturing every eligible expense and maximizing the true potential of your claim.

Calculating the SR&ED tax credit depends on several factors, including your business type, province, and the amount and type of eligible R&D expenditures. When preparing your SR&ED claim, it’s important to choose the calculation method that best suits your business’s needs. You must also ensure that expenditures claimed under the SR&ED program are not also claimed under other government funding programs for the same purpose, a practice commonly referred to as “double-dipping.” This means that if you’ve already received a grant, subsidy, or tax credit from another federal, provincial, or municipal program to cover certain R&D costs, those same costs cannot be fully claimed again under SR&ED.

In such cases, you are typically required to reduce your eligible SR&ED expenditures by the amount of assistance received. Failing to do so can result in the denial or reduction of your SR&ED claim and possibly trigger penalties or audits from the CRA.
To stay compliant and maximize your total funding, it’s important to strategically coordinate multiple funding sources, ensuring that each program supports different aspects of your R&D activities or cost categories without overlap.

To ensure you maximize your return and stay compliant, work with Ayming Canada to help calculate your SR&ED tax credit and guide you through the process.
